Shaka kaSenzangakhona
Reformed military organization and built the Zulu from a small chiefdom into a kingdom that dominated Southern Africa.
Life
Wandering youth
Shaka was born c. 1787, the son of the Zulu chief Senzangakhona; his mother, Nandi, came from a neighboring people. Because his parents' relationship broke down, as a child he moved with his mother from one people to another, later growing up in the powerful Mthethwa chiefdom, where he served in the army under its chief Dingiswayo and became known for his bravery.
Military reform
When Senzangakhona died in 1816, Shaka took the Zulu chieftaincy with Dingiswayo's support. He introduced a system of regiments organized by age and, according to tradition, adopted a short-hafted stabbing spear suited to close combat along with a large shield, using the "bull horn formation" to envelop the enemy. After Dingiswayo's death he defeated the Ndwandwe at the Mhlatuze River, then continually conquered the surrounding peoples, building a centralized Zulu Kingdom with KwaBulawayo as its royal capital.
Last years and assassination
After his mother Nandi died in 1827, Shaka reportedly ordered an extremely harsh period of mourning, which caused discontent within the kingdom. In 1828 he was assassinated by his half-brothers Dingane and others. Many accounts of Shaka come from the records of early European traders and from later legends, and his image remains disputed among historians, but his status as the founder of the Zulu nation is widely acknowledged.
Legacy
Shaka kaSenzangakhona built a small chiefdom into the most powerful kingdom in southern Africa; his military and political reforms profoundly changed the balance of power in the region, and he is therefore regarded as the founder of the Zulu nation. His expansion was intertwined with the contemporaneous upheavals of the Mfecane, which displaced large numbers of people. Many accounts of his cruelty come from European traders and later legends, and scholars still debate their accuracy and how far they are exaggerated.
