Versed in astronomy, calendrics and engineering, he wrote the encyclopedic Dream Pool Essays in his later years.

Life

Technocrat of the Reforms

Shen Kuo came from a family of officials in Hangzhou. In his youth he followed his father to various posts and gained broad knowledge. After entering officialdom through the examinations he served as a local official and as director of the Bureau of Astronomy, took part in drawing up a new calendar, went as envoy to the Liao to settle the border, and oversaw the management of the Bian River. He was an important technical official during the period of Wang Anshi's reforms.

Dream Pool Essays

In his later years he was repeatedly demoted after being caught up in the factional struggle between the New and Old parties. While living in retirement at his Dream Pool Garden in Runzhou, he compiled a lifetime of observations and research into the Dream Pool Essays, covering astronomy, mathematics, geology, weapons, medicine, crafts and other fields. It records in detail such important observations as movable type printing, the use of the compass in navigation and the origin of fossils, making it an encyclopedic work rare in its time.

Science and Character

Later historians of science regard the Dream Pool Essays as an important summary of ancient China's scientific and technological achievements, and Shen Kuo himself is often called "one of the most remarkable figures in the whole history of Chinese science." Politically, however, he attached himself to Wang Anshi, and in his later years he also falsely accused Su Shi, helping to drag him into the Crow Terrace Poetry Case, so his character is quite controversial. This contrasts sharply with his scientific reputation, and later generations often judge the two separately.

Legacy

Shen Kuo was one of the rare polymaths of ancient China. His Dream Pool Essays cover astronomy, mathematics, geography, physics, medicine and many other fields, and the British historian of science Joseph Needham rated it very highly. Politically he followed Wang Anshi's reforms, and he was later implicated in the defeat at Yongle city and demoted. As for his reporting on Su Shi before the Crow Terrace Poetry Case, the story comes from Southern Song miscellanies, and some scholars consider it unreliable; assessments of his character remain divided to this day.

Major works & achievements
